Sgt. John Greene (top left & bottom right in photos) enlisted in the Foreign Legion on March 17, 1983. Unlike most new recruits, he did his basic training with the 1ere R.E.C., at Orange, and not at Castelnaudary. He served with the 4eme Escadron his entire career, from 1983 until his untimely death in 1988. Sgt. Greene was shot and killed in a cowardly act, while on his way back to camp on November 23, 1988. Though his assailant has never been found, French Police speculate that the murder was politically motivated. Sgt. Greene's brother, Declan, was also a member of the Foreign Legion, choosing the airborne regiment (2eme R.E.P.) instead of the cavalry. Reposez-Vous En Paix Camarade |
