The weapon which I am holding is the SIG, made in Switzerland. This was a transitional weapon that we used for a short time before acquiring the F.A.M.A.S. Up to the  point of receiving the SIG we had been equipped with the same semi-automatic rifle and S.M.G. that Legionnaires had used in Indochina and Algeria in the 1950's and 1960's

The Bordel Militaire de Campaign is evident at the top of the photo behind the row of trees. This was the Legion controlled bordello on base which "officially" didn't exist

Trying to look like I know what I'm doing

This photo was taken just inside the Ethiopian border. We weren't supposed to be there, but in the desert it isn't always easy to tell where you are exactly.

et des Issas 1st Day Cover 1974

Djibouti became independant from France in 1977,
only three years before I arrived there. The Afars and
the Issas are the two ethnic tribes which shared the
territory before independance. Before and after 1977 there were several tribal conflicts in the region  between the two groups

Legionnaire de 1ere Classe
