It's a pleasure to see one more site that speaks of this unique, amazing, out-of-the-ordinary subject. The French Foreign Legion IS respect! Hope everything turned out the way you expected after leaving the Legion. Many apply but few are chosen. Nothing compares to it! Lucky are those who were part of it. I know, I was one. My best to all the Legionnaires. Great site!

Good site mate. Regarding the comments by Martin O'grady: there's nothing wrong with asking what to expect of the Legion, in fact anyone with an ounce of intelligence would do a little research so he is better prepared. I've been there, seen it, done it also O'grady, but I am more than happy to give advice to people thinking of joining. One piece of advice for potential recruits, like all walks of life you get twats like O'grady who think there the bollocks cause they've done it. He probably spent 4 years whining in sick bay. Au revoir.

I have news for people who want to join - it's easy. Stop asking people what they think and for tips regarding the Legion. If that's the way you are all thinking then forget about joining for 5 years because you won't make it. If you want to go then get up and go to France and join. Stop asking about it. Sorry Porter, but I hate people who want to know about the Legion before they join instead of just going. Really good web site.

I really enjoyed this site and will return to it often in the future. My interest in the Legion started when I did a mini-thesis for history as a student at university about 20 years ago. The paper dealt with the battle of DIEN BIEN PHU in Indo-China in the early fifties. I was impressed by the bravery and stoic behaviour recorded by historians of all the French soldiers there, but especially the Legionnaires.
I myself am not an ancien, but I served in the South African forces in Angola and Namibia in the 70's and 80's.

This is one of the best FFL sites I've seen. I thoroughly enjoyed the material you've collected here, and it's clear you've spent a great deal of time putting this page together for others to see. The only thing I would suggest: include some of your stories for visitors to read. You must have a million of them and I'm sure they're as fascinating as the rest of your site's content.

Hi, in Oct. 1993 I was billeted in a French Army barracks just outside of Paris. I can't recall the name, however it did have a Foreign Legion Recruiting Office towards the front of the Barracks area (a small rectangular, detached, concrete, grey painted building). Would this be Fort de Nogent? I can forward a photgraph I took in 93 if need be. Appreciate any help.

Fantasic web site. Enjoyed it a lot browsing through it. Been thinking of becoming a legionnaire for a while now so think it's about time I got off my ass and became part of the family. Best wishes, Marty

Thanks Roy. It's been a neat experience seeing what my brother did those years he was gone. I knew he always felt great pride serving with the two best armies in the world- the U.S. Marines and the French Foreign Legion (2 R.E.P.).

Brilliant site. Always felt I should have done a spell myself but as it was I joined the British Army and spent 14 years there. I have a mate who spent 15 years in the Foreign Legion, Powel was his name. Anyway, what a fantastic site. On browsing through it really makes me wish I had joined. Keep it up on the site.

A wonderful site and a real treat for those who served France, the Legion, and their Legion brothers honourably. My own volunteer service in the U.S. Army (66-69) DMZ Korea 2nd Infantry, pales in comparison to the training but I do understand the feeling of comradeship and loyalty and I remember those nights when your only friends were a clean weapon and the guy in the next hole.
Great Site!

Well mate, I've got to be honest, your site is so well put together that I would rate it as a number one site. I've looked at a considerable number of Legion sites, and the top 3 in my opinion are; 2eme REP, Joe Van Raamt's site, and yours. All 3 sites are a pleasure to look at.

Joined round about the time you were leaving - I served 84-89. Great site, congratulations. My big regret was I never took enough photos while I was in. Yours bought back a lot of memories.
